>> there's another! >> brennan: and world cup controversy, all those goals and celebration, was it poor sportsmanship by u.s. women, or are critics being unfair? >> brennan: good evening, i'm margaret brennan. this is our western edition. prosecutors in the dominican republic say baseball superstar david ortiz was the target of an $8,000 hit. they say the gunman, who shot ortiz at a nightclub sunday night, is now in custody along with several other suspects. ortiz's wife said today he has been able to sit up and walk around as he recovers at a boston hospital more than 1,600 miles from the scene of the attack. mola lenghi is in santo domingo. >> reporter: dominican officials say rolfy ferreyra cruz is the gunman who shot boston red sox legend david ortiz sunday night in a brazen attack at a nightclub in santo domingo. police described the shooting as a sophisticated hit job carried

out for about $8,000 involving two vehicles and multiple suspects who tracked the former big leaguer while he was at the club with friends. investigators say the alleged gunman was riding a motorcycle driven by this man, 25-year-old eddy vladimir feliz garcia. surveillance video shows ortiz being shot in the back at point- blank range. cruz is being charged with attempted murder. garcia is charged as his accomplice. garcia's lawyer says that he's a fan and did not know what was about to happen. after two surgeries, ortiz continues to recover at massachusetts general hospital in boston. in a statement, his wife tiffany said he will remain in the i.c.u. for the coming days, but he is making good progress towards recovery. the attack on the slugger, known as "big papi," has rocked the sports world. hall of fame pitcher pedro martinez played with ortiz for two years, winning a world series championship in 2004. >> but i am so disappointed to know that someone like david,

who saved so many lives, can have someone after his life. and i'm sorry, i guess... i'm sorry. but it hurts me. it hurts me. >> reporter: authorities told us here at the attorney general's office today they are still investigating this shooting, including who ordered the hit on ortiz and what their motive was. at least four suspects remain at large. margaret? >> brennan: the first sentence was handed down today in the college admissions scandal. the former coach of stanford university's sailing team received just one day in prison. it was not the message prosecutors were hoping would be sent to other defendants. here's don dahler. >> it is time for me to move forward with my life. >> reporter: john vandemoer walked out of boston federal court a free man, having gotten credit for serving a single day in jail.

the father of two young children was visibly relieved. >> this case for me was about trying to do what i thought was right for the team. >> reporter: prosecutors were seeking a 13-months sentence for the former stanford sailing coach, who had agreed to accept more than $600,000 from rick singer, the alleged mastermind of the college admissions scandal, but vandemoer never pocketed any of that money, using it instead to buy boats and gear for the sailing program. and today, a judge kept asking prosecutors, how is that a bribe? >> i did not take any money personally. all the donations went to stanford and the sailing team. >> reporter: stanford fired him the day he was indicted. but vandemoer was not just the first to be sentenced. he was also one of the first to plead guilty and to own up. >> he's remorseful. he apologizes to his family. >> reporter: the stage is now set for the 49 other defendants, parents who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to get their children into elite schools, coaches who accepted and pocketed the cash.

of the remaining defendants, actress felicity huffman, seen this week at her daughter's high school graduation, is among those pleading guilty. actress lori loughlin is among those still fighting the charges. >> i think anyone who looks at this could see it as a benchmark in their favor. i think that would be a mistake. >> reporter: vandemoer's attorney says he's already paid dearly, having lost his job and his reputation. and unlike others in this case, no one was denied admissions to stanford because of his actions. margaret, that seemed very sympathetic to the judge. >> brennan: don dahler, thank you. a house committee voted today to hold attorney general william barr and commerce secretary wilbur ross in contempt for withholding documents related to the 2020 census. we'll have more on that in a moment. late today, the president's former aid hope hicks agreed to testify before a congressional committee investigating the president. donald trump, jr., took his turn today.

here's nancy cordes. >> reporter: the president's oldest son spent nearly three hours re-answering sensitive questions behind closed doors. >> i don't think i changed anything of what i said because there was nothing to change. >> reporter: donald trump, jr., was asked about discrepancies in his previous testimony regarding a meeting with a russian lawyer and efforts to secure a trump tower moscow deal. in 2017, he told congress he was only peripherally aware of the moscow negotiations, but his father's former lawyer, michael cohen, said he had briefed trump, jr., repeatedly. >> do you recall how many of these briefings there might have been? >> approximately ten in total. >> okay. >> reporter: trump, jr., insisted today he did not lie to congress. >> sir, are you worried about perjury? >> not at all. >> reporter: across the capitol, another vote to hold the attorney general in contempt of congress and the commerce secretary, too. the democrats who lead the house

oversight committee said the men investigate how a controversial new citizenship question ended up in the u.s. census. >> it's designed to intimidate and instill fear. >> reporter: the administration retaliated by exerting executive privilege over the census documents congress wants as the president defended the new question. >> i think when you have a census and you are not allowed to talk about whether or not somebody is a citizen or not, that doesn't sound so good to me. >> reporter: the supreme court is expected to rule this month on whether the citizenship euestion can be included in the 2020 census. experts have warned that the question will discourage some immigrant families from filling out the forms thereby, margaret, skewing population data. >> brennan: nancy cordes at the capitol. the day after jon stewart slammed congress over healthcare funding for 9/11 first responders, a house committee

passed a bill today that would cover them until the year 2090. stewart testified along with former new york city police detective luis alvarez, one of many first responders who got cancer after working at ground zero. alvarez said he was starting his 69th round of chemotherapy today. there were more clashes today in the streets of hong kong. protesters are outraged over a proposal to send criminal suspects to mainland china for prosecution. riot police met them with tear gas and rubber bullets. ramy inocencio was in that crowd. >> reporter: "we have to use force," said hong kong's police chief, and they did. they shot tear gas and pepper spray, swung batons and fired rubber bullets. protesters pushed back with water bottles protected by umbrellas and masks. everyone was a target, including

us. oh! already, the smoke and the tear gas is making its way here. feeling it inside your nose, into your eyes, it's getting closer and closer. helping hands came from these protesters. >> drink some water, it will flush you out. >> reporter: okay. thank you. but it's a small kind of sting when your future is at stake. >> there is no hope, but we still need to continue to fight against the beijing government and protect our city and our future. >> reporter: the hope, to stop lawmakers from passing a controversial extradition bill. the fear, if passed, anyone here could be extradited to mainland china. human rights lawyer jason ng says that could include foreigners. if i'm an american and i did something bad here, i could poiabeto china? >> well, you don't even have to

do anything bad. what is to stop china from making up evidence? >> reporter: hong kong's chief executive, carrie lam, who is appointed by beijing, says she hasn't sold out hong kong. but in a separate speech, she condemned the protesters as rioters. that designation means protesters may be subject to very long prison terms if arrested, but that's a risk many are willing to take, especially as we get closer to the bill's passage. chief executive carrie lam says she hopes to do that by next week. margaret? >> brennan: ramy inocencio in hong kong. today washington, d.c., saw and heard something that hasn't happened in more than a 100 years. it was a staged military flyover of the white house. weijia jiang on what it was all about. >> reporter: a single f-35 fighter jet flew over the white house, celebrating two things president trump is fond of: a

good deal and a good show. he watched the display with polish president andrzej duda and their wives just minutes before making this joint announcement: >> i was very pleased that poland announced the intent to purchase 32 american-made f-35 fighter aircraft like you just saw. >> reporter: the f-35, the most expensive u.s. weapons program ever, is projected to top a trillion dollars over its life span. an hour of flight time is about $44,000. the defense deal with warsaw also includes the deployment of 1,000 to 2,000 u.s. troops to poland, which will cover the cost to support them. >> we'd be taking them out of germany or moving them from another location. >> reporter: duda pushed for more u.s. service members and even suggested setting up a permanent base called "fort trump." the polish president talked about the need to beef up security in the region in response to heightened russian

aggression. mr. trump said this about moscow: >> i hope that poland is going to have a great relationship with russia. i think it's possible. i really do. i think because of what you've done and the strength and maybe we help also. >> reporter: president trump is expected to meet with russian president vladimir putin later this month on the sidelines of the g-20 summit in japan, and with chinese president xi jinping as those two leaders try to work out a trade deal. margaret? >> brennan: weijia jiang at the white house. well, now to the midwest where heavy rain and flooding this spring has farmers struggling with their crops. this is the slowest start to the corn planting season on record. the u.s.-china trade war is only adding to that pain. haan reynolds is in northern illinois. >> you planted here? >> oh, yeah, this is all planted. we'll dig down here and find the kernels. mipe to sp dave kestle's corn crop this spring. >> that one has given up already. >> reporter: really?

>> uh-huh. >> reporter: usually knee-high by now, his corn plants are just green specks in a sea of brown dirt. >> i doubt that even now that i've uncovered it if that one hauld survive. >> reporter: record rainfall in april and may forced kestle to delay planting for six weeks, finishing the job just yesterday. but now that his seeds are in the ground, all it takes are a couple of sunny days to bake the dirt rock hard. >> he's fighting hard to try to come up, but he was under this. >> reporter: kestle says he needs a perfect balance of sun and rain to even approach last year's corn and soybean harvest. what do you think the odds of having a perfect balance between sun and rain? >> go to vegas. i think your odds are better. >> reporter: the weather is a problem at a time the trump administration is waging a trade war with china, where u.s. soybean exports have fallen about 80%, a decline that could mean a $3 billion loss for american farmers, but kestle supports mr. trump and believes
